The Challenge

Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust wanted to address their level of Healthcare Associated Infections, particularly MRSA and C-Diff. It became clear that although practice and process contributed to these, to make improvements that would last, a broader approach would be required.

The Approach

After some initial engagement work to understand the root cause of recurring issues, recommendations were made based around a simple compelling vision supported by four strategic foundations; people, place, performance and public and patient. Then energy was created through running a series of Instant Impact events in selected performance hot spots. The events were run over five days and followed a tried and tested process. Teams were energised to identify key issues and ideas, leaving most of the time for implementation, thus ensuring maximum impact. Medium and long term actions were captured at 5 weeks and 5 months milestones.

The Result

The area which undertook the events, saw not just an immediate and significant reduction in infection rates, but also dramatic improvement in all four strategic areas.
